Solo is the ultimate practice App for mastering fretboard visualization, designed by world renowned guitarists Tom Quayle and David Beebee.
Four powerful fretboard trainers allow you to work intuitively on each aspect of the visualization process; learning note names, memorising interval shapes, outlining chord changes, and practicing scales.
Solo asks you to find intervallic functions against one root note, chord symbol or scale at a time, listens to the notes you play, and doesn’t move on until you’ve correctly found each note by its intervallic function in the specified order.
Practice with Solo and finally learn your note names, master interval shapes, confidently play through chord changes and break out of scale boxes with intervallic functions. Start transforming your playing and confidence on the fretboard today!
NOTE TRAINER
The Note Trainer is perfect for beginner and intermediate players getting to grips with note names on the neck - the foundation of solid fretboard knowledge.
‣ Solo shows you random root notes to find and listens, waiting for you to get it correct.
‣ Slide on the interactive fretboards for helpful diagrams and to study alternative options. Choose from 6 string guitar (standard and 4ths tuning), 7 string guitar, 4 string bass & 5 string bass.
‣ Optional practice suggestions offer challenging ways to limit and test yourself.
‣ Duration based workouts allow you to craft the perfect practice session.
INTERVAL TRAINER
The Interval Trainer will help players at all levels work on interval shapes with intervallic functions - the key to unlocking true freedom on the fretboard.
‣ Choose any combination of intervallic functions to practice.
‣ Create custom interval groups or choose the intervals for ANY chord type or scale.
‣ The Interval Trainer will randomise your chosen intervals and ask you to find them against either a fixed or random root note.
‣ Slide on the interactive fretboards for helpful diagrams, showing you where all of the interval shapes are across the neck, and to study alternative options. Choose from 6 string guitar (standard and 4ths tuning), 7 string guitar, 4 string bass & 5 string bass.
‣ Duration based workouts allow you to craft the perfect practice session.
CHANGES TRAINER
In the Changes Trainer you find intervallic functions, using single notes to outline different chord types or sets of chord changes, a key skill for learning to improvise through chord changes.
‣ Practice outlining intervallic functions through over 100 common chord progressions and single chord exercises.
‣ 50 intervallic function levels. Go from simple chord tones to complex melodic structures and scales.
‣ Solo intelligently maps out the correct intervals over each chord and listens for you to play each intervallic function in the specified order.
‣ Powerful workout options provide almost limitless ways to challenge yourself.
‣ Transpose the key of any progression or exercise.
‣ Choose to randomly transpose the progression (or single chord exercise) each time it repeats.
‣ Work on voice leading chord tones through single note lines.
SCALE TRAINER
The Scale Trainer contains a vast array of scales and powerful workout options, allowing you to finally break out of the box and develop a much deeper understanding of how scales are constructed on the fretboard.
‣ Practice finding scales on the fretboard using intervallic functions.
‣ Over 50+ Scales and modes.
‣ Powerful workout options provide almost limitless ways to challenge yourself.

We're super excited to bring you Solo v2!
For this new version we've re-imagined what the experience of Solo should be, offering a much more complete learning and practice tool for players at ALL levels. To achieve this new vision we've included: -
‣An updated, intuitive design with two powerful new trainers, making Solo MUCH more accessible and useful for beginner and intermediate players.
‣The Note Trainer allows you to work on finding notes names and basic root notes with practice suggestions to guide your workouts. Solo challenges you to find randomised root notes on the neck and confirms when the chosen note has been played.
‣The Interval Trainer allows you to work on finding Intervallic Function shapes, the key to unlocking true freedom on the fretboard. Select a single interval to work with or create any combination of intervals to find against either a fixed or randomised root note on the
neck.
‣Both new trainers feature optional onscreen interactive fretboards that react to what you play, enhancing the learning experience during your workouts. Solo includes fretboards for 6 and 7 string guitars, 4 and 5 string bass and even supports Tom Quayle's own 4ths tuning.
‣Other new features include: Duration based workouts, allowing you to set timers for your practice sessions in the Note, Interval and Scale trainers.
‣The Changes Trainer now offers truly random transposition upon repeat. For example, select one of the common chord progressions (such as a Major II-V-I) or single chord types and Solo can now randomly choose a new key (or root note for single chord types) every time you complete the progession.
‣We’ve included 50 new jazz standards, new changes trainer levels plus new exercise progressions.
‣Solo also now remembers the last thing you were doing in each trainer, so you can continue practicing right where you left off.

Great app, amazing update!

Sølo is an absolutely incredible practice tool that I’m not only using for interval training but also intonation training on my fretless bass. The latest update adds so much additional value. The one thing I’m still missing is the ability to add my own changes or import them from somewhere like iReal Pro, but I imagine this is difficult to implement. The app is incredible even without that though.

Sadly, it seems like there is no more updates to this app? I had hopped for custom progressions at least and at best an aural represent of the chords or even a drone tone. Would make it so much more a worthy app. Seems to be solely aimed at Jazz Players… disappointed.

Really glad I found this app! It has become an essential part of my practise routine.
Sadly, it's quite hard to find on the app store. I tried searching for "solo", "sølo", "solotrainer", "solo guitar trainer" etc., eventually "solo tom quayle" turned up the result.
Also, it would be really nice to have a free try-before-you-buy option to demo the app. Maybe just having maj pentatonic scale and single chord tones on a ii-V-I.

Amazing practice tool if you are willing to practice.

A great tool to practice. You can use it for fretboard knowledge, Solfege, etc etc..but of course, this app is not a magic pill. Just practice guys

I only scratched the surface of this app so far... lots of possibilities, which makes it really fun to practice. The included video tutorials are good, too, although personally I usually prefer a written manual.
Already a great app and worth the price, but of course there’s still some room for improvement:
- would be nice if the app remembered where I left off.
- the repeat function could cycle through the circle of fifth with each iteration
- for the three and four chord tones it would be cool if in addition to the “forward”, “reverse” and “random” order there could be a “musical” option which would start the first note of the new chord nearest to the last note of the previous chord. And an “alternating” order.
- maybe some sound playing the current chord? To not only learn the fretboard but also how the intervals sound in relation to the chord.

If you don’t wanna be lost on the fretboard any longer, this is exactly what you need! It’s not simple right away, you have to be persistent BUT it provides a clear and beautiful path and it won’t let go until you play that note requested.
Before long both your mind and muscle memory will create a map if you just do this. This is like cardio. Amazing. Guys, please make more apps :)

Great work from some great guitarists!
It’s a bit advanced and I am missing „Smoke on the Water“ but other than that this is a great tool to improve your chord visualization of you already possess the basic knowledge to get started in SOLO!
