Dark Mode missing

Content is Great, But pain in my eyes because Apple Night Mode Not Supported and no night mode available. So reading it on phone is no fun and feels to lead to blindness.

Good app but breaking news are broken

Like the app, but i don't freaking care who won the Australian open so why put it on "breaking" news.
It is so overused and I already disabled everything else. If the queen dies, thats breaking news or if North Korea drops an A-Bomb somewhere. That is what breaking news defines. Don't spam stuff that literally only a small percentage of readers care about to all readers.

Takes forever to load

And constant reloading makes it really hard to scroll through the headlines. It’s not my connection, by contrast the WaPo app is much better. Fix it, please, because the content is great, once one can read it. I have been messing with it now for about 10 minutes without being able to look for the articles I want to read, which prompted me to go to the apps store and write this complaint.

Dark Mode please!!!!

A dark mode would make reading the news may more pleasurable!
I would also like a better position for the „saved for later“ folder. Sometimes I forget that I have saved articles, because I just don’t come across that folder when browsing the app.
Thanks!

Nice app overall, but dark mode is really in order. Also, i found the old “for you” tab better than the new one, as the articles appeared to be more relevant for me back than.

Can‘t read most of the articles without an account. I don‘t inderstand why i have to give them my personal data as a free user.
Sure, should i decide to become a subscriber i will make an account. But for now it doesn‘t look like that.

Way too many, mostly irrelevant and ugly ads

 –
maulwurm
 –
2020-09-26
Version 9.33.1
Sept 2020:
I would give zero stars if I could. The app is so annoying. Huge and mega UGLY advertisements ( always the same ones and always topics that are utterly irrelevant to me) that sometimes load, sometimes not, use my data volume (am I entitled to receive a compensation?), all in all a gruesome experience!!!
May 2019:
Those extremely jarring and bandwidth abusing ads are so destracting. The also prevent smooth scrolling of articles and most of the time totally block my screen. They even block any interaction with the app (freezes are occurring at high frequencies). What a mess!
Unfortunately, almost every article or even, section overviews now contain up to three advertisements. How am I expected to enjoy reading?
Finally - and hopefully lasting - no more ugly banner ads at the bottom of the screen. Many other welcome visual changes make using the NYT iPhone app a pleasure again. The result: I've re-subscribed.
A few minor bugs remain I have been introduced tough. Feedback from support was prompt and there's hope that these little things are being addressed soon.
Great job, NYT!
Could be a nice app, elegant new design, and of course excellent journalism but:
- crash queen
- annoying "randomly generated" banner ads
- saved articles list utterly incomplete (shows only 5% of saved articles)
- hopeless support ("thank you for your feedback" - well thank you indeed!)
Further thoughts:
The iPhone screen's lovely, nicely pocketable but necessarily cramped. Likewise, the new iOS 7 NYT app is lovely designed, a joy to read articles (for the first time since the original release in 2008).
So why would the NYT want to ruin this experience by throwing ugly banner ads in the face of paying subscribers? These ads take up real estate and seem to come and go without any obvious pattern causing a level of anxiety every time one opens the app (will I be bombarded by those banners today, none at all, only on the home page, on all section lists or worst of all, in the saved articles category and god forbid, when trying to read saved articles).
This seems to be a game the NYT wants to play with its loyal (international) readers.
The question is: shall the reader draw a line and unsubscribe to demonstrate unhappiness?
Also, needless to say, any email to the NYT customer service gets returned with an arrogant "thanks for your feedback" message. Has the NYT heard of what it could mean to provide meaningful responses to legitimate subscribers requests?
Disclaimer: This is not a review of the journalistic quality of the NYT, this is only for the app.
I love the fresh and elegant iOS 7 style of the app but I was deeply disappointed that those obtrusive, real estate screen eating ads at the button of lists and articles had raised their ugly heads again. Like I said in previous reviews, I don’t care about even full screen sized ads as long as there is a way to opt out (by dismissing for instance the full screen apps). The return of those ugly ads is especially disappointing as I keep expecting premium service as a NYT subscriber. It’s me who paid for the iPhone screen and thus, I expect to be able to use every pixel to my advantage and not those of advertising companies!

I love their strong opinions and their views. And I’d love to support great journalism. Unfortunately, I hardly read it lately so I decided to cancel my basic digital subscription.
Now I’m desperately trying to cancel my subscription (not through App Store but directly with NYT) but no chance.
The chat is non responsive.
The hotline is non responsive. I was trying to call with 3 different phones simultaneously. All of them were apparently 7th in line. How is this possible?
It feels like scam. I’m furious and will ask my credit card provider to book my money back and deal with them. Why do they ruin their reputation with such poor behavior? Sad.

Good but lacking a dark mode.

Version 6.6.0
The app itself is well made, easy to navigate but could use some minor improvements. For example making fonts selectable would be great, perhaps making the settings more generally accessible than just under “for you” would be nice. But my biggest problem is reading in the dark. i’d love support for a dark mode, because in the dark all of that white is almost aggressive on the eyes.

Version 8.1.0
Was gibt noch Hoffnung. Habe das Abo direkt bei der NYT gekauft und nicht im App Store. Zahlengedächtnis Monat €4, anstelle des viel höheren Preises im App Store. Für alle die informiert bleiben wollen ein muss!

Version 9.23.1
The App is fine, the content also. I really want to support good journalism. But the Ad load seems to have increased to a level where I cannot enjoy reading the articles anymore. It is not only the massive ad load, but also the loading time of the ads which causes the article to “jump” up and down.
If you do not scale your ads back I have to consider canceling the subscription.

Version 6.0.1
I use this App all the time and I am very happy with it. It helps me to quickly see world news and the NYT is clearly one of the best newspapers!
The App is great except for one small detail: It’s Geofencing capability. What good is an App that will turn off features for the user at the push of a button? Their button!
When posting comments on the NYT website, I have tested the ability of the App to send a bogus error message that a post cannot be made, all the while when other systems (web browsers) work fine. This does not appear to be a bug, ratter a selectable feature on the NYT side. Sad if true!
This sneaky way of designing new technology is quite troubling because it would suggest a potential future none of us want to see. (1984)

Version 9.6.0
One of the most important newspapers in the world and the management is not willing to take care of fair customer relations.
(1) the monthly fee more than doubled without further notice from 9€ to 22€ in September 2018,
(2) emails with complaint about that change are not taken care of within more than a month,
(3) Subscriptions start via app and can be finished only by phone call or email via website. But first one has to find the proper information. A practice I would expect from tabloids and not from first class publishers.
Please make it possible to start and end subscriptions via app! Until then I am not willing to continue my subscription.

I‘ve been using the NYT app (as a subscriber) for more than a year now and was first pleasantly surprised by its nice typography, clean layout and great offline capabilities.
Some of their ads were always somewhat irritating, especially for their own podcasts - something they refuse to fix.
Recently tho they added autoplaying video and all falls apart. You can turn off autoplaying video content, fine. Video ads however still play and they are a nightmare. They drain battery and cause the app to lock up for seconds.
With this in mind their website provides a much better experience if you turn on ad-block. Sad.
