iVCS3
Official EMS VCS3 emulator
The VCS3 was created in 1969 by Peter Zinovieff's EMS company. The electronics were largely designed by David Cockerell and the machine's distinctive visual appearance was the work of electronic composer Tristram Cary. The VCS3 was more or less the first portable commercially available synthesizer—portable in the sense that the VCS 3 was housed entirely in a small, wooden case.
The VCS3 was quite popular among progressive rock bands and was used on recordings by The Alan Parsons Project, Jean Michel Jarre, Hawkwind, Brian Eno (with Roxy Music), King Crimson, The Who, Gong, and Pink Floyd, among many others. Well-known examples of its use are on The Who track "Won't Get Fooled Again" (as an external sound processor, in this case with Pete Townshend running the signal of a Lowrey Organ through the VCS3's filter and low frequency oscillators) on Who's Next. Pink Floyd's "On the Run" (from The Dark Side of the Moon) made use of its oscillators, filter and noise generator, as well as the sequencer. Their song Welcome to the Machine also used the VCS3. The bassy throb at the beginning of the recording formed the foundation of the song, with the other parts being recorded in response. The VCS3 was also a staple at the BBC’s Radiophonic Workshop, and was a regular (and most frightening) sound generator for the Dr Who TV series. Many fo the monsters and atmoshere;s created for the show came directly from the VCS3.
Description
The VCS3 has three oscillators (in reality, the first 2 oscillators are normal oscillators and the 3rd an LFO or Low Frequency Oscillator), a noise generator, two input amplifiers, a ring modulator, a 18dB/octave (pre-1974) or 24dB/octave (after 1974) voltage controlled low pass filter (VCF), a trapezoid envelope generator, joy-stick controller, voltage controlled spring reverb unit and 2 stereo output amplifiers. Unlike most modular synthesizer systems which use cables to link components together, the VCS3 uses a distinctive patch board matrix into which pins are inserted in order to connect its components together.

Although the VCS3 is often used for generating sound effects due to lack of built-in keyboard, there were external keyboard controllers for melodic play. The DK1 in 1969 was an early velocity sensitive monophonic keyboard for VCS3 with an extra VCO and VCA. Later it was extended for duophonic play, as DK2, in 1972. Also in 1972, Synthi AKS was released, and its digital sequencer with a touch-sensitive flat keyboard, KS sequencer, and its mechanical keyboard version, DKS, were also released.

für die bedienoberfläche würd ich mir eine ipad-gerechte alternative rein funktionale bedienoberfläche wünschen. der klang ist phat, durchsetzungsfähig, charakteristisch. die möglichkeiten sind weitreichender, als auf den ersten blick erkennbar. werde mich damit wohl vertiefend beschäftigen müssen.

Auf meinem Ipad 2 noch alles bestens.. nun auf meinem neuen Ipad Air 3 unschöne verzerrungen z.b. Bei dem wont get fooled again sound.. an etwas lauteren stellen.. ausserdem noch digitale verzerrungen als audio unit effekt..
Sonst ein irre guter synthesizer der aber nicht leicht zu handeln ist..

Mit war klar das ich nach dem Kauf eine menge Arbeit vor mir habe.
Aber was man aus der Software für Sounds erstellen kann ist gigantisch. Alan Wilder lässt grüßen. Ich nutze ihn neben Mellotron und Fairlight. Damit sollte ein Soundtrack 1978 kein Problem sein. Bringt Zeit mit um das Teil kennen zu lernen. Ist man einmal befreundet, kann daraus schnell liebe entstehen. Gute Arbeit Jungs!

not only very near to the original, but also with incredible extensions like sample integration and complex sequencing. As EMS Hardwareuser i really appreciate the programmers serious approach to a serious instrument...obviosly Zinovieff (EMS founder)also liked that. the instore soundsets are recommendable and to get away from profane synthesis to a different level of understanding routing, modulating, envelopes etc, there might be no better app. A fourier comparison of its virtualcomponents to the original proofs the high quality. I rarely give five stars, but in this case well earned.

Ich kann die negativen Bewertungen nicht nachvollziehen. Zwar habe ich nicht die Möglichkeit die app mit einem echten VCS3 zu vergleichen aber wer hat die schon?
Die Benutzeroberfläche ist absolut bemerkenswert gegenüber den sonstigen Einerlei. Da hakt es anderswo viel eher. Man kann mit der app sehr intuitiv arbeiten, ich weis wirklich nicht worüber ich da meckern sollte.
M.E. ist ein Stern völlig daneben, selbst wenn die app nicht 100%ig wie das Original klingt, zumindest hätte ich es mir nicht träumen lassen so etwas mal benutzen zu können und mich in die Denke des VCS3 einfühlen zu können.

Sehr zu empfehlen für Klangtüftler und oder für Leute, die gerne das Wesen dieser Maschine ergründen möchten. Das ist ein richtig virtueller Experimenalsynthesizer, der etwas Zeit erfordert, um sein Potential zu entdecken.
Ich würde mir eine Split Screen Remote Funktion wünschen, die es ermöglicht beide Panels auf zwei iPads anzuzeigen.
Noch besser wäre vielleicht ein authentischer Controller.
Das Rumscrollen finde ich etwas nervig.

Great effects sounds like the records from Who, Pink Floyd and other artists. Also usable as Keyboard Synthesizer via midi or build in keyboard. Excellent Synth for creating new monster sounds. Beginners need some hours of study the manual.
iVCS comes with a lot of great preset sounds.
What is missing?
There is no description of all available In-App purchases.
The user manual is not the best.
iVCS is really good for space sounds, lead sounds and creating owne noises and sounds with loaded samples.

Es gibt andere großartige Synth-Emulationen für das iPAD - z.B. von Korg oder Arturia - aber hier können sich alle noch ein Scheibchen abschneiden, der iVCS3 ist das am liebevollsten gestaltete iPad-Instrument, das ich kenne.
Jetzt nach dem Update mit den Mods (in-App-Kauf) nochmal so gut.
Das Einzige, was fehlt, ist eine SynthiA-GUI-Variante, meiner Ansicht nach als Synth-i-pad die wegen der Portabilität eigentlich angemessenere Layoutvariante.

Dieser Synthesizer bildet die Möglichkeiten eines EMS VCS zwar nicht perfekt ab, ist aber ein gewaltiges und eigenständiges Instrument, an dem sich kein Ungeübter wagen sollte.

Muss auch sagen, das ich die schlechten Bewertungen nicht nachvollziehen kann. Ob es nun (näherungsweise) klingt, wie das Original - keine Ahnung, aber man kommt schnell zu herrlich schrägen 60s SciFi-Sounds. Und was die Bedienung betrifft: Darauf kann man sich gut einstellen, vor allem sollte man nicht übersehen, das ein Doppelklick auf einen Regler ein kleines Menü öffnet, in dem sich pro Knopf die Ansprechgeschwindigkeit einstellen lässt.

Die bisher grösste Enttäuschung im Bereich der Music Apps. Es wurde so ziemlich alles falsch gemacht, was man bei einer Synthapp verkehrt machen kann. Es beginnt mit einer Tastatur, die stets zur Hälfte im Layout hängen bleibt, sogar eine der Tasten ist zur Hälfte vom Layout angeschnitten und lässt sich nicht bespielen! Einer meiner Freunde hat einen VCS3. Ein grossartiger, wohlklingender und ergonomisch gelungener Synthesizer. Die App bewegt sich im Rahmen des krassen Gegenteils. Ob sich der Entwickler wenigstens ein bisschen für den Ripup schämt? Der Sequencer humpelt so for sich hin, unbrauchbar ,untight. Die Klangerzeugung riecht nach Kaum kaschierter Sampleengine, insgesamt so käsig wie ein GM-Rompler. Design, Ergonomie, Sound hier wurde eigentlich alles schlecht gemacht. Hut ab!

Great Synthesizer Emulation

A always dreamed of a VCS3 or Synthi A. Now it cames true, but in software. I don't ever used the original hardware, but the emulation is really nice. I like the sound and the interface is creative. I wish there will be support for 14Bit CC MIDI to control various parameters within smooth 16384 steps via a hardware controler.

Tja, der Synthesizer ist nichts für Sound-Flachbrettbohrer. Es gibt eine grosse Anzahl von Software-Simulationen vom VCS bzw. Synthie AKS. Der hier ist der beste! Der zweitbeste klingt ehrlich gesagt genauso, kostet aber 160 mal mehr !
Und wie bescheuert muss jemand sein, der ein PhotoShop Panel einem orginalgetreuen Design vorzieht?
Die positive Bewertung ist subjektiv. Wer das Teil als Hardware kennt, ist erstaunt. Wer es nicht kennt, aber schon einmal davon "gehört" hat und mit diesem Synthesizer nicht klar kommt, sollte sich einen 89 Cent Spielzeugsynthesizer leisten. Dann ist er auf jeden Fall auf der richtigen Seite !

Handling is not the same as with hardware but the Sound is like 90% there.
You really need to spend time to learn it.
It has not a lot of presets but they are quite useful as a starting point for your own creations and they help you to get to learn this synth.
