“सारे जहाँ से अच्छा हिंदोस्तां हमारा...” मशहूर गीत के रचयिता मोहम्मद इक़बाल का जन्म 9 नवंबर, 1877 को सियालकोट (अब पाकिस्तान) में हुआ। अल्लामा इकबाल नाम से मशहूर इक़बाल कवि, दार्शनिक, राजनेता और बैरिस्टर थे। उन्होंने लाहौर में आरंभिक शिक्षा के बाद कैंब्रिज विश्वविद्यालय से दर्शन में डिग्री, लंदन से बैरिस्टर की डिग्री और म्यूनिख विश्वविद्यालय से डॉक्टरेट की। यूरोप से भारत लौटकर लौटकर उन्होंने वकालत को आजीविका बनाया।

उन्होंने उर्दू और फारसी दोनों में साहित्यिक रचनाएँ कीं, लेकिन अधिकांश रचनाएँ फ़ारसी में कीं। इक़बाल की काव्य प्रतिभा से प्रभावित होकर ब्रिटिश सरकार ने इन्हें ‘सर’ की उपाधि से सम्मानित किया।

इक़बाल के जेहन में हमेशा वह हिंदुस्तान था, जो किसी सरहद में नहीं बँटा था, लेकिन बाद में वे पाकिस्तान के ही हिमायती बनकर रह गए। जहाँ एक ओर उन्होंने लिखा—‘सारे जहाँ से अच्छा हिंदोस्ताँ हमारा’ तो वहीं दूसरी ओर एक अलग मुसलिम राज्य बनाने का विचार भी उन्होंने ही रखा। पाकिस्तान में उनका लिखा—‘लब पे आती है दुआ बनके तमन्ना मेरी’, कौमी तराना बन गया। 21 अप्रैल, 1938 को मोहम्मद इक़बाल का निधन हो गया।
