Disco: Sex and Race in Seventies America

Disco: Sex and Race in Seventies America

Länge: 1:01:21
Music for sex, dancing, and watching the straight world go by…
The explosion of Disco provides an extraordinary window into the tumultuous world of the 1970s, with its themes of sex, drugs, race and sexuality. By the start of the 1970s, America was a nation of dystopian gloom. The radical dream of the 1960’s had dissipated, with economic decline, Vietnam and Watergate polarising and disenchanting the public. Then, at a party in New York held by the DJ David Mancuso, something new was born: Disco. An intoxicating kaleidoscope of dancing and colour with an orgasmic new sound, it united disparate groups under the banner of music. An escape from the concerns of the day, it captivated the mainstream imagination with its idealism, open drug use, self-consciously flamboyant clothes, and acceptance of race and homosexuality at a time when the Civil Rights Movement was raging and gay rights still contentious. But, with its rising orthodoxy, Disco was also attracting a dedicated base of critics and detractors. They decried its hedonism, its debasement of traditional masculinity, and, with the Aids crisis swirling, its immorality.
Join Dominic and Tom as they discuss the rise and fall of Disco, culminating in the shocking night of Disco Demolition at a White Sox game on the 12th of July 1979. Could it survive this ultimate reckoning?

The world’s most popular history podcast, with Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook.
They question the nature of Greatness, why the West no longer has civil wars and whether Richard Nixon was more like Caligula or Claudius. They're distilling the entirety of human history, or, as much as they can fit into about fifty minutes.

When I saw Moonwalkers on my Podcast list I groaned. Yet another sanctimonious droning on of ‘One small step….’ .again. I was resolved to dump it and move on but my existing podcast finished and I was driving so I couldn’t stop. I let it run. And then it ran and ran. In the end it turned out to be unbelievably fabulous. Congratulations one what must be one of your very best!! Just amazing💯

Been listening for 12 months and working through entire back catalogue. 54 to go. Very intelligent presenters with great sense of humour. The mimicry of Reagan was hilarious. Their books are brilliant as well.

Recently found pod love it going through all back episodes. Titanic was unbelievably good.
You ask for a feedback survey soz can’t be asked to do that but seriously I know he’s important and a massive influence on religion and therefore much of our historical culture but seriously…. At the beginning of the episodes I clearly remember you both saying we try not to bring religion up at all if possible seems this is the polar opposite of the last what know seems like the 15th episode limping on.

I discovered these podcasts less than a year ago and have been binging the back catalogue ever since. It has been an absolute pleasure. I’ve always been interested in history and had good school teachers in the subject, but this podcast achieves what my school lessons never did: it provides an overarching sketch of world history and its underlying themes, providing a gateway for the listener into a wide range of subjects they can then deep dive into themselves. It combines all this with a lightheartedness and wit that creates an educational and enjoyable experience. Five stars!

I very much enjoyed your series on The Titanic, so much that I’m afraid I’ve become a bit obsessed! Watched A Night To Remember and actually I think it portrayed the class distinctions on the ship better than the James Cameron film.

Love the affectation-free, unapologetic intelligence and wit

How can you cover Titanic and not yoke in Gareth Russell?!
That snide aside, these gents are just fabulous. The podcast-world is full of fustian ‘thinkers’ recycling fashionable opinions so it is a relief to have found this little nook of good old-fashioned interrogation of and love for Clio and the rest of the muses. Here are two sharp minds as yet un-hobbled by the petty ideologies of our day to ponder the petty, the ugly and the pretty good or impressively bad of the distant or more recent past. There is something to surprise, amuse or provoke new thoughts on the most seemingly stale subject. I wish there could be more Tolkien, though, as those episodes proved far more enriching and enjoyable than I was prepared for.

Fantastic…

I sometimes struggle with the personal lens with which they view history . That lens is English Public School boy with notes of Daily Mail . See the Studnet Riots in France episodes ( my French mum who was there at the time will no longer listen , following those episodes) and even the recent Titanic episodes , they are pains to dismiss that class played a role in the death toll, which I found a little unconvincing and skated over .

Having listened to a lot of ‘The Rest is History’ over the last few years, I thought I had heard their best work, but no: the mini-series on the Titanic really reaches a new peak with the links to social, political and economic history in GB and elsewhere they link the story to, without, thankfully, forgetting the human tragedies at the heart of the sinking. Memorable. Thank you gentlemen.

Thanks to all involved, keep up the brilliant work!

To express how much I love this podcast. I did history A level & wanted to do a degree. My mother made me study law, so this show is now my guilty pleasure. The combination of education, humour & banter is just tremendous. I love the mixture of one offs, series & nautical knowledge. Who else could do History’s Greatest Monkeys after Carthage?! Please don’t stop the accents and Dominic’s “crikey” gets me every time! 🤣❤️

My ‘O’ level history was a dreadful disappointment ; ergo, I had not the faintest desire to continue my studies in this subject. IF ONLY I’d had this brilliant duo, instead! In addition to being so obviously knowledgeable & well read, their ‘double act’ is so entertaining. They exude deep friendship & respect for each other, as well as both possessing a great sense of fun & keenly tuned wit. Recommended without hesitation or reservation.

Sorry, but baboons are not apes, they are monkeys. Monkeys from the old world do not have tails.
Lemurs are not monkeys or apes. They are an older, wet-nosed lineage that predates all simians (monkeys and apes together). Perhaps this episode should have been called history’s greatest Simians. Or history’s greatest primates.

Public school schoolboys Tom n Dom big up The knowledge as a fun five minute read. Yesterday far-right Islamophobe Douglas Murray had a long article claiming the IDF kill rate in Gaza was reasonable published in the rag. Just so you know the, at best, grubby stuff these boys are peddling.

My favourite podcast. The chemistry between Dominic and Tom is very endearing and also very funny at times. They bring life to a very broad range of topics but do so in a highly engaging manner. Just one question though: is there anyone in the production team that didn’t go to a private school? Just curious after the episodes on the history and culture of Britain’s public schools!

Commenting isn’t a thing I do often. I know it helps keep good things going though, and I have to say The Rest is History is just such an entertaining, informative and downright wonderful listen. Podcasts are weird as an entity - oddly intimate, yet covering everything from minor personal reminiscences to the most important events ever. Tom and Dom are two of the masters of the game, from the comedy impressions at the start to the in-jokes, they are all at once brilliant broadcasters, eminent historians and have an eye and ear for the human interest angle that will make you smile - no matter how grim the subject matter. The Holocaust episodes are jaw-droppingly well done, the grimmest of subjects taken as seriously as they demand, where the lightness and humour in the 4 part UK 1970s political shenanigans series made it a joy and left me so less worried about today’s politics as a bonus. No murder plots, dead dogs or military coups probably being plotted in Number 10 currently. I thnk.
