At the Skimmington Fayre, openly misogynistic Reverent Anthony Gant is shot dead, not long after his cousin Mildred Danvers has passed away in the night. Barnaby is not convinced that Mildred died from natural causes. With so much animosity between the Skimmington ladies and the gentlemen Riders it is impossible to fathom who has not got a motive for murder. It takes a photograph and a cognitive leap for Barnaby to solve this mystery. Mildred Danvers arrives at the funeral of Vivienne Marwood. Bereaved husband, Henry, is upset by the death of his terminally ill wife. Alan, who is deemed special by ODowd, seems to be able to speak to the dead. Henry is unsettled as Alan tells him at the funeral that all is forgiven. Mildred Danvers approaches her cousin Rev. Anthony Gant and openly confronts him claiming that she knows what went on at his last Parish and is not afraid to use the information against him. She also tells Anthony that she expects she wont have a natural death. Cathy Hewlett overhears this conversation and becomes suspicious.
